I decided to read Ramsey. My husband and I didn. Dave Ramsey Financial Peace Program – Wednesdays at 6 pm. Dave Ramsey knows what it’s like to have — and to lose — it all. Ryan DeMarko discusses the Financial Peace Program based on Dave Ramsey’s 7 Step Program. Shawnee Alliance Church 4455 Shawnee Rd. Lima, OH 419-991-6546 www.daveramsey.com/fpu/home/ Tweet « Previous. After reading Total Money Makeover, I realized that I could pay off my car and our student loans in one year if I changed my thinking. I am happy to say that as of January 2. I are debt free except for our mortgage! Dave Ramsey. I was very happy to have the opportunity to review the nine- week course and see how it could help. Class in a Box. The Financial Peace University Membership Kit arrived neatly packed in a nice box, which I received as a free review copy, and I was impressed by the quality of the various materials it included: Financial Peace University Workbook. Hardcover copy of Dave Ramsey. A typical class would include viewing a video and taking notes in the workbook, small group discussion and maybe even some refreshments. I was unable to find a class that worked with my schedule in time for this review, but I would definitely like to attend a class in the future. I listened to the Lesson 1 CD, took notes in the workbook, and then completed the assigned homework. One of my tasks was to read the first chapter from the Complete Guide to Money, which proved to be rather redundant after listening to the CD and completing the workbook, but it definitely helped to reinforce what I had learned. I was able to make do without attending a live class, but the in- class discussion portion would have been nice to experience. The membership number included in the kit also allows for online registration where you can access copies of worksheets to print, bonus articles and class video (available to view only if you have signed up for a live class). Key Concepts. Financial Peace University is based on Dave Ramsey. Although the baby steps should be completed in order, I was interested to find that the classes jump around a bit. For example, the first lesson, . This approach really worked for me, because I like to think ahead and have some idea of how I am going to accomplish future goals. Ramsey is a proponent of using an . As someone who almost exclusively uses a rewards credit card (paid off each month) rather than cash, this is a concept that I have been reluctant to try. However, the nice envelope system included in the kit and the first lesson I completed both convinced me to try using cash- filled envelopes for some budget areas, such as groceries. I hope that dealing with cash will help prevent silly impulse buys. I also like the idea that any money left over can remain in the envelope to reduce the amount I will need to withdraw from the bank for the next month. With a strictly electronic system, that extra money often gets lost in the shuffle and tends to be spent on things we don. Dave Ramsey teaches that every single dollar should have a specific place to go. Although there are many computer programs, websites and apps for creating budgets, he really emphasizes the good old- fashioned pencil and paper approach. A budget worksheet in the back of the workbook (also available on the website to print) provides space for just about every category imaginable, and also provides ballpark percentages so you can make sure your budget is on track. I enjoyed putting pencil to paper, and was happy to see that all of our budget categories were indeed within Dave. I used to treat any leftover money as a bonus that could be spent on anything; now that money is assigned a specific purpose. A Team- Based Approach. Did you know that financial problems are one of the leading causes of divorce in the United States? Financial Peace University is designed in part to strengthen relationships by involving both partners in every aspect of financial planning. Parents are even encouraged to bring teenagers along to the class. Although my husband and I have never argued about money, management of our finances has been very lopsided. I have calmed my fears and stress about money by becoming something of a control freak with our budget and bank accounts, but it didn. Sometimes I wonder what he thinks about the non- essentials he sees me buy for myself with our shared money. I like to refer to the success stories when I. Although I am religious, it. I will admit that I was initially hesitant to read Total Money Makeover due to the perception I had developed, and the fear that Ramsey. I feel the same about the Financial Peace University course. The common- sense concepts that Ramsey teaches are sound, often echoed by other leading financial experts, and do not depend on shared religious beliefs. In fact, some of Dave Ramsey. You have no doubt heard that . He argues that wealth building is not morally reprehensible, but instead enables us to give and help others like we never have. Become a Success Story. Since its inception in 1. Financial Peace University. The system teaches clear steps and useful strategies to get out of debt and achieve financial goals at any age or income level. The kit provides convenience by eliminating much of the legwork and confusion that can come with developing a financial strategy on your own, and the course. Total Money Makeover helped change my perspective, but Financial Peace University provided the added detail and structure that I needed. The kit I reviewed, which includes attendance of a live nine- week class, currently sells for $9. Dave Ramsey. For a little bit more you may choose a home- study course with DVDs (which also includes live class attendance if you like), or you can opt to save some money with a basic internet- only version. THE EFFECTS OF ADVERTISING ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTSResearch has shown that young children—younger than 8 years—are cognitively and psychologically defenseless against advertising. They do not understand the notion of intent to sell and frequently accept advertising claims at face value. Advertising is a pervasive influence on children and adolescents. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) held hearings, reviewed the existing research, and came to the conclusion that it was unfair and deceptive to advertise to children younger than 6 years. What kept the FTC from banning such ads was that it was thought to be impractical to implement such a ban. However, some Western countries have done exactly that: Sweden and Norway forbid all advertising directed at children younger than 1. Greece bans toy advertising until after 1. Denmark and Belgium severely restrict advertising aimed at children. ADVERTISING IN DIFFERENT MEDIATelevision. Children and adolescents view 4. For instance, M- rated video games, which according to the gaming industry's own rating system are not recommended for children younger than 1. These sites are required to provide notice on the site to parents about their collection, use, and disclosure of children's personal information and must obtain “verifiable parental consent” before collecting, using, or disclosing this information. MARKETING TECHNIQUESAdvertisers have traditionally used techniques to which children and adolescents are more susceptible, such as product placements in movies and TV shows,2. TV shows and toy action figures or other products,7 kids' clubs that are linked to popular shows, and celebrity endorsements. Cellular phones are currently being marketed to 6- to 1. Coca- Cola reportedly paid Warner Bros. Studios $1. 50 million for the global marketing rights to the movie “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,”2. Certain tie- in products may be inappropriate for children (eg, action figures from the World Wrestling Federation or an action doll that mutters profanities from an R- rated Austin Powers movie). Children's advertising protections will need to be updated for digital TV, which will be in place before 2. In the near future, children watching a TV program will be able to click an on- screen link and go to a Web site during the program. Interactive games and promotions on digital TV will have the ability to lure children away from regular programming, encouraging them to spend a long time in an environment that lacks clear separation between content and advertising. Interactive technology may also allow advertisers to collect vast amounts of information about children's viewing habits and preferences and target them on the basis of that information. SPECIFIC HEALTH- RELATED AREAS OF CONCERNTobacco Advertising. Tobacco manufacturers spend $3. Exposure to tobacco advertising may be a bigger risk factor than having family members and peers who smoke. Two unique and large longitudinal studies have found that approximately one third of all adolescent smoking can be attributed to tobacco advertising and promotions. In addition, more than 2. Recent evidence has emerged that tobacco companies have specifically targeted teenagers as young as 1. Alcohol Advertising. Alcohol manufacturers spend $5. Young people typically view 2. During prime time, only 1 alcohol ad appears every 4 hours; yet, in sports programming, the frequency increases to 2. Research has found that adolescent drinkers are more likely to have been exposed to alcohol advertising. Given that children begin making decisions about alcohol at an early age—probably during grade school. Minority children may be at particular risk. Drug Advertising“Just Say No” as a message to teenagers about drugs seems doomed to failure given that $1. Drug companies now spend more than twice as much on marketing as they do on research and development. The top 1. 0 drug companies made a total profit of $3. Fortune 5. 00 combined. Is such advertising effective? A recent survey of physicians found that 9. In addition, children and teenagers may get the message that there is a drug available to cure all ills and heal all pain, a drug for every occasion (including sexual intercourse). Food Advertising and Obesity. Advertisers spend more than $2. On TV, of the estimated 4. Healthy foods are advertised less than 3% of the time; children rarely see a food advertisement for broccoli. Increasingly, fast food conglomerates are using toy tie- ins with major children's motion pictures to try to attract young people. Nearly 2. 0% of fast food ads now mention a toy premium in their commercials. Several studies document that young children request more junk food (defined as foods with high- caloric density but very low nutrient density) after viewing commercials. In 1 study, the amount of TV viewed per week correlated with requests for specific foods and with caloric intake. At the same time, advertising healthy foods has been shown to increase wholesome eating in children as young as 3 to 6 years of age. Sex in Advertising. Sex is used in commercials to sell everything from beer to shampoo to cars. New research is showing that teenagers' exposure to sexual content in the media may be responsible for earlier onset of sexual intercourse or other sexual activities. What is increasingly apparent is the discrepancy between the abundance of advertising of products for erectile dysfunction (ED) (between January and October, 2. Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis)6. TV networks. This is despite the fact that 2 national polls have found that a majority of Americans favor the advertising of birth control on TV. Ads for ED drugs give children and teens inappropriate messages about sex and sexuality at a time when they are not being taught well in school sex education programs. Research has definitively found that giving teenagers increased access to birth control through advertising does not make them sexually active at a younger age. American advertising also frequently uses female models who are anorectic in appearance and, thus, may contribute to the development of a distorted body self- image and abnormal eating behaviors in young girls. ADVERTISING IN SCHOOLSAdvertisers have slowly but steadily infiltrated school systems around the country. The “3 Rs” have now become the “4 Rs,” with the fourth R being “retail.”8. Ads are now appearing on school buses, in gymnasiums, on book covers, and even in bathroom stalls. More than 2. 00 school districts nationwide have signed exclusive contracts with soft drink companies. These agreements specify the number and placement of soda- vending machines, which is ironic given that schools risk losing federal subsidies for their free breakfast and lunch programs if they serve soda in their cafeterias. In addition, there are more than 4. Pizza Hut chains and 3. Taco Bell chains in school cafeterias around the country. There is some good news, however. In May, 2. 00. 6, the nation's largest beverage distributors agreed to halt nearly all sales of sodas to public schools and sell only water, unsweetened juice, and low- fat milk in elementary and middle schools. Diet sodas would be sold only in high schools. School advertising also appears under the guise of educational TV: Channel One. Currently available in 1. Channel One consists of 1. Advertisers pay $2. If you're interested in learning more about what it means to be a graduate student, or you are interested in finding out more about financing options, check out our resources section and blog. We have enlisted the services of several subject matter experts to help us bring you information and tips about the grad school application process, and how to survive and thrive once you enroll in a graduate program. Reason #1 to Attend Graduate School: Career Advancement. Some professions do not require graduate degrees, but it may be helpful career advancement. After a few years working in various business fields, it is common for people to pursue a Masters of Business Administration. Some people may choose to specialize in certain areas of the business world and pursue a Master of Accountancy (MAcc) or a Master of Taxation (MTax), just to name a few. In education, a teacher cannot become an administrator without earning a Supervisors Certificate or a Masters in Educational Leadership. Reason #2 to Attend Graduate School: Potential Salary Increase. While advancing in a career could sometimes lead to higher pay, the attainment of a graduate degree also has the potential to increase a person’s earning potential in certain fields. For example, in the education field, the level of schooling one obtains could determine the pay scale they are on in combination with the amount of years one has worked. If you are considering going to graduate school for this reason, be very careful to weigh the costs of education (including the loss of earnings if you go to school full time) with your potential salary after graduation. In particular, research the career center of the program you are interested in, to get a feel for the job opportunities available. Having a Graduate Degree PAYS! Reason #3 to Attend Graduate School: Requirement for Employment. For some careers, in order to even be considered for employment, an applicant must hold a graduate degree in their respective area. This is not only applicable for doctors and lawyers, but for careers such as Physical Therapists, School Counselors, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, and Social Workers. Reason #4 to Attend Graduate School: Career Change. Despite an individual's level of educational attainment, very few people stay in the same career throughout their entire work life. Reasons for career changes vary from being laid off, burn out, or change of interest. However when the time comes to look for a new job, one's past experience may not be relevant enough to switch careers without training. Fortunately, most graduate degree programs do not require an applicant to have majored in the same content area, which makes it easier for someone to pursue a graduate degree in a new field as long as they at least hold a bachelor's degree. Some do however have prerequisites that a student must take before matriculating. For example, no major is required for medical school, but an applicant might need to complete prerequisite math and science courses in order to have the foundation to handle the rigors of a medical program.
